Energy Clearing - Smudging
Have you ever walked into someone's home or office and your whole mood just changes!?
It's very likely that you were affected by the energy in that space.
The energy in your home may still be residing from the families that lived there before you. So, not only are you dealing with your family matters, but you may be dealing with all of the energy of the families past. Each and every time someone has a negative thought, it is released into the space. Every time there is an argument in the home, all that negative energy is released onto the walls, floors and space around the structure. This lower energy can affect you on all levels of your being, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It can lead to physical mental and emotional illness and disease and it can test your beliefs, your faith and stray you from your Spiritual Path.
Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to clear the energy in your space. One that we use right here at Hamburg Healing Center is smudging. We do this by burning Sage or Palo Santo in an Abalone shell and spreading the smoke with a feather throughout the area…
As you smudge (or use smudge spray), you can recite these prayers (or speak your own):
“May the pure white Light of Spirit bless and protect me as I perform my Spiritual work. I ask that my Spirit Guides and Angels join me, guide me and protect me. May only good come to me and may only good go from me. Only love and light in and only love and light out.” “I ask that any and all negativity in this room be resolved and released from here. I invoke Divine Love, Light and positive healing energy into this space. I ask that this space support me for my very highest healing good. I ask that this space support me physically, mentally, emotionally and Spiritually. This is asked in Spirit. This is done in Spirit. And so it is.”
It's also important to open a window or door and "let the negative energy out." To properly clear, you must make the intention to release whatever has been stagnant in the space, but also to make the intention for positive energy to take its place. You can do this in a few different ways, which we will explore in future posts.
Here are some of the meanings behind the tools used in this method:
Just as an Abalone Shell provides safe shelter for abalone, it will also lend a protective, healing energy to your spirit. Shielding you from waves of negativity, the soothing energy of the abalone shell is full of peace, beauty, compassion and love. The Native Americans believe this shell to be sacred and use it, along with sage, to carry messages to Heaven. This beautiful material is used in jewelry and is said to help one deal with emotional turmoil. It is the perfect companion for survivors of traumatic experiences or anyone looking to enhance their relationships.
The symbolism of the feather and its connection to the element of Air, which helps to complete the balance of elements, is one reason why Indigenous peoples use feathers in their smudging rituals. Birds are believed to have a special connection with the Creator, are messengers, and the use of their feathers helps us to forge a deeper connection with the Spirit, the Creator, and ourselves. When we waft the smoke with a feather, it is believed that we are sending our intentions (thoughts, the element of Air) into the Universe.
White Sage has been used by Indigenous people as a form of ancient spiritual ritual. This sacred plant is known for its many benefits including warding off negativity, but also keeping infectious bacteria, viruses, and fungi at bay. Most types of sage have anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties. Many types of sage also contain thujone, which is mildly psychoactive. It’s actually found in various plants that are used in cultural spiritual rituals to enhance intuition. Studies have also established that white sage is rich in compounds that activate certain receptors in the brain. These receptors are responsible for elevating mood levels, reducing stress, and even alleviating pain.
Palo Santo, which means “holy wood” or “wood of the saints,” is a mystical tree, similar to Sage and Cedar, that grows on the coast of South America and is related to Frankincense, Myrrh, and Copal. Burning Palo Santo wood creates an uplifting, pleasant, fresh smoke that works miracles in keeping away mosquitoes and other insects. It is said that the smell enhances creativity. Known for its calming effect, it also supports the immune and nervous systems which helps with faster recovery from illness, and this is documented through the use of its essential oil. The holy wood also contains a high concentration of a compound called d-limonene, a compound that is thought to aid in the prevention of a variety of cancers. The lovely earthy, sweet and citrusy smell literally changes the energy inside any room and is perfect for the Christmas and holiday season.
